Highlighting the Achievements of the Karikó Cohort (2022-2024) in the LIVE Program
June 17-19, 2024, the La Doua campus of Université Lyon 1 in France hosted a remarkable event celebrating the Katalin Karikó cohort of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s (EMJM) in Leading International Vaccinology Education (LIVE). This event marked the culmination of an intensive and transformative academic journey for 23 students hailing from 18 different countries, which began in September 2022
The Academic Journey to International Internships and Research Endeavors of Iyiola & Naeem
In September 2022, the diverse cohort convened at the La Doua campus for our integration week, embarking on our academic journey together. This initial meeting set the stage for a profound sense of camaraderie that enriched our educational experience throughout the program. We received rigorous training from eminent scholars at the LIVE Consortium institutions, which include:
Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in Spain
Universiteit Antwerpen (UA) in Belgium
Université Jean Monnet Saint-Étienne (UJM) and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (UCBL) in France
In addition to the primary consortium institutions, we benefited from contributions by academics, trainers, and staff from associate institutions and partners. This comprehensive academic framework provided us with a robust foundation in vaccinology, essential for our future professional success.
Our cohort’s academic journey involved six months of study in each country, followed by six months of international internships at partner institutions across Europe, North America and Asia. These internships allowed us to gain hands-on experience and engage in cutting-edge research in various global contexts.
Beginning in late January 2024, we undertook significant research endeavours at our host institutions, that we have reported and discussed during our thesis defence sessions. These presentations, which cut across various disciplines in vaccinology, showcased the students’ advanced competencies and innovative strategies in crucial areas of immunology, vaccinology, and public health. Our work reflected scholarly rigor and a deep enrichment fostered by the high standards of the LIVE program. We express profound gratitude to the coordinators, jury members, and internship supervisors who contributed to our training and development as young scholars..
