As Barcelona graced us with its waning days of summer, we officially embarked on the journey to become the next Masters in Leading International Vaccinology Education (LIVE). Our first stops were the Faculty of Biosciences and Faculty of Medicine – nestled peacefully on the Bellaterra Campus of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
Though exciting and seemingly picture-perfect, Master LIVE is not without its difficulties. While some of us had a hard time keeping up with the fast-paced nature of master’s education, others grappled with intense homesickness, either due to becoming first-time expatriates or because we couldn’t quite replicate the tastes of home that we so longed for. A few even managed to get lost on the very first day while trying to find the lecture hall within the campus’ vast expanse. Fortunately, these feelings of uneasiness soon subsided, largely thanks to the generous support from the program’s local coordinators at UAB and UB, as well as the professors’ utmost dedication to teaching.
Upon finding our feet in the new “home”, it became clear to us that Barcelona has more to offer than just excellent academics. Our weekend excursions to walk along the beaches, or wander through the archaic Gothic Quarter, and specifically participate in the week-long vibrant festival La Mercè 2025, not only enriched our social life but also became a channel to forge new friendships along the way – ones that will blossom and exude unique aromas as diverse as our backgrounds.
