Announcing the LIVE 2026 Promotion Name: The Marie-Paule Kieny 11th LIVE Cohort

Every cohort in the LIVE Master programme seeks a guiding beacon, a scientific leader whose path reflects not just where vaccinology has been, but where it needs to go. For the 2026-2028 cohort, that figure is Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny. By choosing her name for our promotion, we are celebrating a career that has bridged molecular innovation with global health strategy.

Her work constantly reminds us that vaccines are far more than intricate biological platforms, they are our most powerful tools for global health equity and emergency resilience. From her foundational work in recombinant viral vector development at Transgène, where she pioneered early rabies vaccine candidates, to her strategic stewardship as Director of the WHO Initiative for Vaccine Research until 2010, she has consistently moved the needle on infectious disease control. During the 2014 West Africa Ebola outbreak, her leadership as WHO Assistant Director-General was pivotal, she mobilised an international R&D coalition to fast-track the clinical evaluation of the rVSV-ZEBOV candidate, proving that scientific rigor and crisis response can move at the same urgent pace.

What makes her legacy resonant for us is her focus on what happens after a breakthrough occurs at the bench. A scientific triumph falls short if it remains out of reach for the communities that need it most. Through her board leadership at both the Medicines Patent Pool and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, Dr. Kieny has spent years dismantling barriers to affordable access, advocating for equitable intellectual property frameworks, and driving solutions for neglected populations. She has shown our generation that scientific excellence is incomplete without ethical responsibility.

As we begin our two-year journey across Europe, the Marie-Paule Kieny promotion carries a sharp sense of purpose. Her life’s work challenges us to look beyond the lab, think across borders, and treat global public health as a collective commitment. We adopt her name with immense pride, determined to carry forward her standards of scientific rigor, systems thinking, and compassionate innovation while shaping our own paths in vaccinology.
