Feedback from the XVIII Congress of the Catalan Society of Immunology
Our Belkaid prom of the MASTER LIVE had the opportunity to participate in the CSI congress held on November 21-22, 2024 in Barcelona. This congress was the first of its kind for our class since the beginning of our academic journey in September 2024. The theme of this edition of the congress was “Cross-talk between anatomical barriers and the immune system”. Lectures of the first day focused on autoimmunity. Speakers from different research institutions of Barcelona talked about recent advances in research on several autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), type 1 diabetes (T1D) and chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and how single-cell omics technologies and nanotechnologies are advancing this part of immunology. The second day strated with discussions on another rapidly advancing field: immunodeficiencies. During that session, invited speakers provided insight into how a dysfunction of the immune system, e.g. B-cell dysregulation syndrome, leads to pathologies such as encephalitis, or the relationship between eosinophil count & pulmonary diseases. The day ended with talks related to another hot research topic: cancer immunology. Researchers discussed the characterisation of effective biomarkers to detect lymphocytic leukemia and monitor immune-related adverse events possibly affecting cancer patients.
Experience of Belkaid Promotion participating in the CSI Congress
We felt very motivated by hearing directly from the hardworking persons whose research findings they read about in textbooks and research articles. We enjoyed the interactive Q&A sessions where students also wanted to know about the French-flag model of morphogen gradient and its relationship with cell differentiation. Additionally, for many participants, it was their first time to vote for the posters displayed on several digital boards in the common area. Since catering is always a valuable moment of communication, we did not miss the opportunity to have a little one-on-one chat with the guests during coffee or lunch breaks..
At the end of these two-days of highly informative and engaging sessions, we got to know our future research destinations where we can practically implement the knowledge we are having now. It was truly a privilege for our Belkaid promotion to take part in this congress and we wish to attend more activities like this in the future.
